JEE Main — exam-day methodology
Subject order, pacing and attempt strategy for the 3-hour CBT.
Always confirm the current pattern in the latest NTA information bulletin. Recent sessions have had 75 questions (25 per subject, a mix of MCQ and numerical), +4/−1 marking and 180 minutes.
Pacing
- About 2.4 minutes per question on average, but spend it unevenly: 1 minute on direct-formula items to bank time for multi-concept ones.
- Subject order: start with your strongest subject for a confidence and time surplus. Many toppers do Chemistry first because it is the fastest to score.
Attempt strategy
- Use the three-pass method in each subject.
- Numericals currently carry negative marks. Don't fill in random integers.
- Percentile is relative to your shift. A hard shift doesn't mean a bad percentile, so don't panic mid-paper.
Topic triage (high return on time)
- Physics: modern physics, current electricity, rotational dynamics (concept-heavy, short calculations).
- Chemistry: NCERT inorganic facts, coordination compounds, basic organic mechanisms.
- Maths: calculus (limits, definite integrals), vectors & 3D, probability.
Using ExamSense
- Take a mini mock in guided mode to learn the approach to each question type.
- Retake in exam mode under time pressure. The result page gives a predicted percentile band.
- Run Challenge sessions on the topics the result page flags as weakest.
