Data sufficiency — the AD / BCE grid

Decide sufficiency without solving, and eliminate three options with one test.

  1. Rephrase the question. Is it a value question or a yes/no question? A definite "no" is sufficient.
  2. Test statement (1) alone.
    • Sufficient → the answer is A or D.
    • Not sufficient → the answer is B, C or E.
  3. Test statement (2) alone, forgetting statement (1).
  4. Only if both fail on their own, combine them.

Common trap: carrying information from (1) over into your test of (2).
